FinTech Spotlight: Ryan Edwards-Pritchard, Managing Director at Funding Options

FinTech Spotlight Q&A

What sets London apart from other FinTech Hubs?

The UK financial services sector is ahead of the game in embracing new tech, with regulators and policymakers encouraging and enabling innovation. Also London is a great place to live, meaning it naturally attracts a huge amount of talent that FinTechs benefit from.

Where are you based in London and why did you choose that neighbourhood?

We’re actually moving at the moment! We’ve had a great office in Southwark that served us very well, but we’re moving north of the river to the Cocoon Building which will put us in the heart of London’s FinTech hub.

Name your favourite accelerators and workspaces in the City

We’re on Tech Nation’s Upscale programme – they’re a great partner that really cares about the growth of the businesses they work with. Scaling is a challenge for any start-up, having support makes such a difference.

Name your London Business Idol

Taavet Hinrikus and Kristo Käärmann have to be contenders. TransferWise is a huge success, you can’t help but be impressed by how it disrupted the money transfer market – valued at $3.5bn and processing $5bn a month, an unbelievable achievement in just eight years.

Any tips for budding entrepreneurs?

    • Couple of options…
    • Innovation is hard, but if you’ve got a great idea, stick with it and create something that’s so good it can’t be ignored. Be prepared though, you’re going to get told “no” – a lot – but you get knocked down seven times, you get up eight.
    • Pick your battles; start-up life can feel like one fire-fight after another, you’ll soon realise you can’t fight them all. Focus on those that are the biggest obstacles to achieving your business goals and write the others off as unnecessary distractions.
