IFGS 2019 Speaker Spotlight: Ryan Edwards-Pritchard, Managing Director at Funding Options
Blogs, ifgs2019, Speaker Spotlight on 10th April 2019
What is it about IFGS that brings you back every year? OR What is it about IFGS that has brought you to the event this year?
Largely the people! I’ve been to IFGS for the last couple of years and it never fails to draw in a great crowd from across the startups, to the scaleups to the stay-aheaders. As well as some of the most forward thinking entrepreneurs from across the world such as Twitter & Square’s Founder Jack Dorsey!
What is the biggest change you have seen in the FinTech industry over the past 12 months?
We seem to have moved away from the ‘Gartner Hype Cycle’ of focusing on technological trends such as Blockchain, AI, Quantum Computing et al to win us that next funding round, and moved towards focusing on delivering real customer outcomes. We’ve also seen a big focus on fintechs partnering with banks and larger financial institutions as their ‘go to market’ strategy.
What are your go-to reads for industry updates and insights?
11FS first and foremost. Otherwise, A16Z podcast and CB Insights newsletter for wider tech trends. Reid Hoffman’s Masters of Scale podcast is also a really insightful resource on what to consider going from startup to scaleup.
If you could be stuck in a lift with 3 people who would it be and why?
Going to assume these we’re talking about people who are alive……
Warren Buffet – bearing in mind the bets that Berkshire Hathaway have recently made and the sentiment behind his most famous quote is “be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful”, we’re a decade on from the last recession, how does he perceive the current state of the world economy and timings of any major corrections to come?
Tim Berners-Lee – we’re coming up to 30 years of the world wide web, with so much conversation around data privacy and security, what does he believe will be the big challenges over the next 30 years, as well as the opportunities?
George R.R. Martin – We’re entering into the final season of Game of Thrones, the suspense of every season is just too much for me… I just need to know how it all ends!
