Q. Tell everyone a little bit about yourself and your role at Innovate Finance

A. I joined IF three years ago and have really embraced this new stage of my career. I work closely with the senior leadership team to set our strategy and ensure we have a strong voice and profile externally with our stakeholders, as well as promoting our members’ many innovative products and services. We are the voice of our vibrant UK FinTech sector, so I am kept very busy and out of mischief! I also lead on our various diversity and inclusion initiatives and enjoy working with partners to make a difference in this area. Previously, I was a consultant in the wholesale financial derivatives markets for 10 years and before that worked for 14 years as a journalist, then a managing editor, for Reuters in various parts of the world.

Q. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from work?

A. I knit, whenever I can!! I am often approached on commuter trains and planes (back in the days when I could fly away…) with the question: are you knitting? I am patiently awaiting my special birthday alpacas – delayed due to the pandemic – so I can then knit with my own yarn. I love surfing and travelling, oh how I miss travelling…I also sit on the board of Guide Dogs.

Q. What are some of your favourite things about working in FinTech?

The passion that drives people and teams to create something new and better in our financial services sector; I love learning about new things, I love trying out shiny new tech, so what better sector to work in!

Q. You can invite any 3 people to your dinner party. Who do you choose and why?

A.

  • Maya Angelou – because she’s a strong woman, who made a lasting impact on society despite the many challenges she came up against in her life as a young black woman in the USA. I was deeply moved by her story when I first read it.
  • Margaret Thatcher – because she’s a strong woman (can you see a theme developing here?!). I didn’t particularly like her or necessarily agree with some of what she did during her time in power, but she was a big part of my life growing up and she has a fascinating story to tell as a woman that I was far too young to appreciate at the time.
  • Brad Pitt – err, because he’s Brad Pitt and have always had soft spot for him 😂
