Alderman & Sheriff of the City of London, Professor Michael Mainelli FCCA FCSI (Hon) FBCS, Executive Chairman, Z/Yen Group, is a qualified accountant, securities professional, computer specialist, and management consultant, educated at Harvard University and Trinity College Dublin. Michael gained his PhD at the London School of Economics where he was also a Visiting Professor. In 1994 he founded Z/Yen, the City of London’s leading commercial think-tank.
What is it about FinTech that excites you?
The possibility of increasing global financial inclusion and equality.
What do you envisage being the biggest development in FinTech in the next 5 years?
Automated investment, e.g. trackers, for all 7+ billion people on the planet, with suitable adjustments as they learn to branch out
What do you enjoy doing in your time away from work?
Too much – skiing, sailing, woodcarving, glassblowing, anything not to do with offices.
What is the biggest change that you have witnessed in the sector over the past 12 months?
People realising, again, they’ve allowed themselves to be duped by hype when they should have thought things through, i.e. blockchain mania. Yet, there is real depth in independent timestamping.
Who would be your top 3 dinner party guests and why?
- Theognis of Magara – why was he the originator of Gresham’s Law in the sixth century BC.
- John von Neumann – for a deep understanding of game theory.
- Fridtjof Nansen – to understand how he developed private passports to help refugees after WWI.
